State governors are the most powerful elected officials at the state level. They control state budgets, appoint commissioners, and shape policy for millions of Nigerians.
Election Requirements:
- •Be a Nigerian citizen by birth
- •Be at least 35 years old
- •Be a member of a registered political party
- •Hold at minimum a school certificate
- •Not have been convicted of any criminal offense
Winning Requirements:
- 1.Win the highest number of votes in the state
- 2.Score at least 25% of the votes in at least two-thirds of the LGAs in the state
If no candidate meets both conditions, a runoff is held.
Powers of the Governor:
- •Chief Executive of the state
- •Controls state security (with limitations)
- •Presents and signs the state budget
- •Appoints commissioners and state officials
- •Can declare state of emergency (with federal approval)
Term Limits: Governors serve a maximum of two 4-year terms (8 years total).
2027: 36 states will elect governors in 2027. Some incumbents are serving their first term and will seek re-election. Others are serving their final term, creating open races with multiple contenders.
