Long-standing position that fuel subsidy is regressive and unsustainable. Said so in 2007, 2011, 2019, 2023. Tinubu administration's May 2023 removal aligned with this position but Atiku has been critical of the sequencing and lack of cushion.
In Abubakar's words“I supported subsidy removal long before it was politically convenient. But how you remove it matters as much as that you remove it.”
Statement, July 2023.
Policy position
Subsidy removal stays — but with a different cushioning package than the Tinubu rollout: targeted transport-sector vouchers, public-transit investment via SUKUK financing, and a phased CNG conversion for commercial fleets rather than the current scattered rollout.
